Skilled Visa Application Process
Migration to Australia under the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program involves many distinct steps.
Generally, Applicants must be able to demonstrate they can fulfill the Basic Requirements, gain a positive Pre Application Skills Assessment (PASA) in a skilled occupation on the relevant Occupation List, be able to pass the Skilled Visa Points Test, and correctly complete the required Expression of Interest (EOI) and if an Invitation is issued complete the visa application form and attach the required documentation online via ImmiAccount. Each step must be successful in order to be granted a Permanent Residency (PR) Visa.
What is a Pre
Application Skills Assessment (PASA)?
A skills assessment is a formal assessment of your qualifications and/or work experience in a specific occupation undertaken by a Skills Assessment Authority. In order to apply for a skilled visa you must be able to "Nominate" a skilled occupation on a relevant list. By "Nominate" this means obtain a positive Pre Application Skills Assessment from the relevant Skills Assessment Authority. Different occupations are assessed by different Skills Assessment Authorities. The assessment criteria vary. For example, Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) the Skills Assessment Authority responsible for assessing Trades persons requires relevant qualifications and work experience. Whereas the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), the Skills Assessment Authority responsible for assessing Teachers, does not require work experience per se.
What is an Expression of Interest (EOI)?
An Expression of Interest (EOI) is administrative application made to the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) via online portal SkillSelect indicating your intention to apply for an Australian General Skilled Migration (GSM) Visa.
It is not a Visa Application.
There is no associated Bridging Visa A (BVA) granted.
It is merely an administrative application. There are various questions asked in relation to your profile and your answers will determine an automated Points Test score calculation. Your EOI is then ranked automatically according to nominated occupation, points score and time.Whether or not you receive an Invitation will depend on your Points Score toal and how you compare to similar applicants.
What is the Points Test?
The Points Test awards points for a series of personal attributes including your Age, English language ability, work experience, qualifications etc.
Your ability to claim specific points depends on many factors. Generally points are locked in at the time of invitation to apply. Therefore, for example, if you were aged 32 years at the time you lodge your EOI but subsequently you have turned 33 years by the time you receive an Invitation to apply, then your points entitlement under the Age Factor is based on you being 33 years of age - which is a lower points scoring age bracket.
The current Pass Mark is 65 points for all GSM skilled visa subclasses.
Eligible applicants can make offshore or onshore applications for either the Independent or Family/State Sponsored Skilled Visa Subclasses.
Effectively an EOI or Visa Applicant can be inside Australia or overseas at time of visa application or grant. It is possible to apply for these visa subclasses whilst in Australia, provided your current Australian Visa does not contain a condition preventing you from making a visa application onshore.
All intending migrants interested in the points based skilled migration or business investment and innovation visa programs are required to submit an EOI and receive an invitation in order to lodge a visa application.
Wherever possible, a complete EOI and Visa Application should be lodged.
